Carter's Graduation

This past weekend we celebrated Carter's graduation. I would say "little brother" but he is only little in age. The english language should have two different words for little in age and little in size. Though he is younger in age he is in no way small than me in size, or strength.

This fall Carter will be attending Virginia Tech in the Corps of Cadets. Which basically means he will be living as if he was in the military school and after he graduates (with a degree in Engineering) he will be in active military duty (Marines) for 5 years.

Here is Emily "helping"

Mom's lovely graduation decor

We had a vast quantity of fruit, and there were still another box of grapes, two containers of watermelon, and cantaloupe in the fridge. We did go through most of it though!

How are you supposed to make floral arrangements look "guy-ish"?

Carter does not particularly like, at all, to have his picture taken; consequently the only option was to take a picture of him smiling candidly.

A representative from Virginia Tech came to give Carter a scholarship for excellent high school achievement. (Not sure exactly what it was but it was something along those lines)

Please note that Carter posed for a picture, take a good look because this will not happen again till his college graduation!

We had a friend of ours smoke 40 lbs of pork shoulders for dinner. After smoking for nearly 12 hours it was tender, moist, and delicious!

We asked a couple of godly men to give a some exhortation to Carter. One of the men could not make it so his ambassador (his wife) read it for him. He compared the Christian walk to various moves in fencing.

My mom read a letter written form Abigail Adams to her son whom was embarking on a long journey when he was 10 years old, it fits perfectly with what my mom had to say, sending her son off.

MY DEAR SON,
T'is almost four months since you left your native land, and embarked upon the mighty waters, in quest of a foreign country. Although I have not particularly written to you since, yet you may be assured you have constantly been upon my heart and mind.
It is a very difficult task, my dear son, for a tender parent to bring her mind to part with a child of your years going to a distant land; nor could I have acquiesced in such a separation under any other care than that of the most excellent parent and guardian who accompanied you. You have arrived at years capable of improving under the advantages you will be likely to have, if you do but properly attend to them. They are talents put into your hands, of which an account will be required of you hereafter; and, being possessed of one, two, or four, see to it that you double your numbers.
The most amiable and most useful disposition in a young mind is diffidence of itself; and this should lead you to seek advice and instruction from him, who is your natural guardian, and will always counsel and direct you in the best manner, both for your present and future happiness. You are in possession of a natural good understanding, and of spirits unbroken by adversity and untamed with care. Improve your understanding by acquiring useful knowledge and virtue, such as will render you an ornament to society, an honor to your country, and a blessing to your parents. Great learning and superior abilities, should you ever possess them, will be of little value and small estimation, unless virtue, honor, truth, and integrity are added to them. Adhere to those religious sentiments and principles which were early instilled into your mind, and remember, that you are accountable to your Maker for all your words and actions.
Let me enjoin it upon you to attend constantly and steadfastly to the precepts and instructions of your father, as you value the happiness of your mother and your own welfare. His care and attention to you render many things unnecessary for me to write, which I might otherwise do ; but the inadvertency and heedlessness of youth require line upon line and precept upon precept, and, when enforced by the joint efforts of both parents, will, I hope, have a due influence upon your conduct ; for, dear as you are to me, I would much rather you should have found your grave in the ocean you have crossed, or that any untimely death crop you in your infant years, than see you an immoral, profligate, or grace less child.
You have entered early in life upon the great theatre of the world, which is full of temptations and vice of every kind. You are not wholly unacquainted with history, in which you have read of crimes which your inexperienced mind could scarcely believe credible. You have been taught to think of them with horror, and to view vice as
" a monster of so frightful mien, That, to be hated, needs but to be seen."
Yet you must keep a strict guard upon yourself, or the odious monster will soon lose its terror by be coming familiar to you. The modern history of our own times, furnishes as black a list of crimes, as can be paralleled in ancient times, even if we go back to Nero, Caligula, or Caesar Borgia. Young as you are, the cruel war, into which we have been compelled by the haughty tyrant of Britain and the bloody emissaries of his vengeance, may stamp upon your mind this certain truth, that the welfare and prosperity of all countries, communities, and, I may add, individuals, depend upon their morals. That nation to which we were once united, as it has departed from justice, eluded and subverted the wise laws which formerly governed it, and suffered the worst of crimes to go unpunished, has lost its valor, wisdom, and humanity, and, from being the dread and terror of Europe, has sunk into derision and infamy.
But, to quit political subjects, I have been greatly anxious for your safety, having never heard of the frigate since she sailed, till, about a week ago, a New York paper informed, that she was taken and carried into Plymouth. I did not fully credit this report, though it gave me much uneasiness. I yesterday heard that a French vessel was arrived at Portsmouth, which brought news of the safe arrival of the Boston; but this wants confirmation. I hope it will not be long before I shall be assured of your safety. You must write me an account of your voyage, of your situation, and of every thing entertaining you can recollect.
Be assured I am most affectionately yours,

Royal Hats

Have you figured out yet that my blog is rather random?
I write about various things that go through my mind; today it is hats. Why do royals get to wear all the hats? They look lovely in them.

The Duchess of Cambridge's dress and hat today at St. Pauls for the Queen's Jubilee service was stunning. I admire her pumps whenever she wears them too.

And coat tails, you hardly ever see men in coat tails. I think they look quite handsome and dapper in them. Men out there, please bring them back.

Princess Eugenie looked lovely in her purple dress and adorable hat.

Princess Ameerah looks stunning in pink with her black hair.

Guys out there, don't go for the picnic blanket look on the head, not the most handsome look

You can wear cute fun hats

Or elegant simple hats

Or really weird hats...

The point is, I think Americans should wear more hats, both men and women. Perhaps I should take responsibility and go out tomorrow and buy a hat and wear it, then maybe everyone else would as well. What do you think?

Rafting

Today, I got back from a fun rafting trip with friends in Tennessee. Unfortunately, I don't have many pictures due to the fact that I did not want to take my camera rafting with me--for obvious reasons. But if I had had my camera, I would have taken a picture of some of us falling out of the boat. After having been in the boat for a grand total of less than 5 minutes we went through our first rapids and three people fell out. Thankfully, we had a man from Navy Special Forces who pulled them out. Thanks!

My dear friend Maryfrances had just arrived in town the day before with her brand new baby which I had not seen yet so we took a quick detour to hold sweet little baby

And even though some of the babies were much bigger, we held and kissed them too.

As pretty as this looks now, an hour later when we drove through it, it wasn't quite so nice.

This is the river where we went rafting--it looks rather calm here. The rapids were class 3 & 4.

These smoke looking things (I don't know what to call them) are the reason these mountains are called the Smokey Mountains.

These are some sweet girls we met along the way.

Certain unmentioned friends of them (lots of them) need to learn from this picture. All I had to do was point my camera in their general direction and they got together and smiled. They did not run, hide, or complain! And the camera did not bite them nor did anything bad happen to them. Please learn dear friends!

We enjoyed lots of laughter together

Up to no good...

Though I did not get any pictures of our last morning, I must thank Charity for her delicious breakfast of hot waffles with homemade strawberry jam and whipped cream, it was delicious. It made the perfect ending to our lovely weekend!

I am...

{Anticipating}

I am getting contacts on Wednesday! I’m quite ready not to have to wear glasses (I don’t go anywhere without them) and be able to buy more than one pair of sunglasses that don’t cost $100 because they are prescription.

A rafting trip with friends, I’m looking forward to being on the water and meeting new friends.

{Sewing}

I never seem to finish up my sewing projects; I just keep hopping from one to another. My biggest project at the moment is an Edwardian tea dress for this event. Currently, I am trying to figure out a skirt design. (I’m not using a pattern). A couple of years ago I found some beautiful fabric on sale and haven’t ever used it, now I finally have the chance!

{Learning}

My life today does not last forever. A few of my friends are moving away this summer. I currently can’t imagine life without them. In times past, God has brought something even better when my life has changed; I simply have to have faith that He has plans for me.

{Hot}

During winter I wish for the warmth of summer, I always seem to forget what life is like when it's 97 degrees with 90% humidity. I generally compare it to walking through hot pea soup. Thankfully, the beach is only 5 minutes away! And my family takes full advantage of the beautiful blue-green cool water.

{Baking}

After picking three buckets of blueberries on Saturday I baked a blueberry pie for my dad who’s favorite dessert is blueberry pie.
I have pretty much only ate blueberries on Saturday. I ate while I picked, and the bucket has been sitting on the counter in a perfect place to snitch every time I walk by. I’ll probably wake up blue tomorrow…

{Thankful}

For the ultimate sacrifice that so many men gave in defense of our country. We went to a Memorial Day picnic today and one of men in his talk pointed out that today, America can probably win any war. During the revolutionary war, and many other wars, men went into battle believing that they could not win, yet the cause was so important to them they went willingly anyway.

{Worried}

If have been watching the weather, you’ve probably heard of the tropical storm Beryl. Currently it is headed dead for us on Wednesday. Normally this does not bother me. But the hurricane season hasn’t even started! I’m wondering if this is a sign of this hurricane season being an extra busy one. We’re due for a big hurricane soon.

I’m also worried for the blueberries. On Saturday there were ripe berries, but there were way more that were still green that will be ripe in a week or so. The branches are drooping there are so many berries. I hope this storm does not destroy the crop!

Life

 Not much is going on in my life right now but I have been writing some articles I just haven't gotten around to finishing them up. In the mean time here are a few glimpses into my life.

I made pavlova with fresh strawberries for Mother's day

I've been helping my two sisters with school (almost done!)

I'm trying to redo my room so I've been playing around with paint colors. I've learned that to cover up the bright color green I currently have you need lots of primer. : )

This morning I took advantage of our beautiful hydrangea bush, all the pictures here are taken from one bush.

Pink, blue, and violet all in one bush!

Our family has also spent lots of time at the beach since our weather has been beautiful.

Kittens: edited by Annie Kate and Emily

No matter what animal (except fish and reptiles) I think about the baby is cute, elephant, cats, otters, cows, or cheetahs. I'm not sure why God does that, perhaps just for pleasure. Anyway, kittens are among the cutest. Our friends just adopted two cute little kitties that I just couldn't help but take pictures of.

I had trouble coming up with creative captions for these pictures so I let my sister Emily and her friend Annie Kate have full control over the captions. Therefore, I cannot accept the credit or censure that might come along reading this post.

"Here I come; BE AFRAID!"

Sherbet

"Say something about her hair (or eyes in this case)."
"What's up with your hair (or eyes)?"
"Recomputing"

Point!

(I didn't think anyone would get that caption, but two people actually writing this post think it's hysterical)

RAWWWR!!!

Easter, the most beautiful of all mortals
(Guess who came up with that caption...)

Making a kitty wish

For having such small paws, they're surprisingly prickly

And our friends also had a baby goat, though not quite as fun to play with as the kittens. His name is Curry.
