Paris Day 1 Part 2

View from Notre Dame

In front of Notre Dame

Right around the corner of our hotel is Shakespeare and Co. It is a famous bookstore here in Paris. There are rooms and rooms full of books, floor to ceiling, taking up every spare inch of shelf in the store

If you have ever read the Linea books you will recognize our hotel since it is the one she stays in when she visits Paris. I read these books as a little girl and was delightfully surprised that I was staying in the same hotel!

For lunch we had crepes, cheese and turkey for me and ham, cheese, and an egg for Emily.

Paris Day 1 Part 1

Written: Monday night Paris time

We arrived here in Paris at 7:30am this morning. We took the 45 minute car ride into the city and arrived at our hotel. It was too early to check in so we left our luggage and walked across the street to Notre Dame. Since I have been in numerous cathedrals before I did not think Notre Dame would be that impressive. Boy was I wrong! Because we went first thing in the morning the sun was shining through the stained glass windows. Simply stunning. Next we climbed the 400 stairs to the top of the bell tower. The view was well worth the climb. And I’ll describe the rest with the pictures…

Writing a blog post in the airport

Destination: Paris, France

Our first view of Notre Dame and also the view from our hotel

It was very dark inside so my pictures are dark as well

The Rose Window

I just couldn't stop taking pictures of the stained glass!

The door to Notre Dame

Our next challenge, climb 400 steps to the top!

Thankfully, I think the view was worth while, it was our first view of the Eiffel Tower ever.

Either the background was blown out and we were lit up...

...or you can see the background but not us. Take your pick.

Gargoyles

Yours truly

Maybe we should get some for our house...

Ever gargoyle is different

This is one of the world's largest bells, the thing in the middle that hits the bell (whatever that is called) ways 1 ton by itself.

On Our Way

3pm EST, Sunday January 15

Well, here I am, sitting in the Newark, NJ airport watching the Peruvians board their flight to Peru, the Chinese to Hong Kong, the Swedes to Stockholm. And me, an American, to France, to Paris! I haven’t posted on the Internet yet about my trip because I don’t like to say where I’m going before I leave. Just in case any bad guys try to rob our house. But be warned bad guys: Part of my family is still at home with a very strong, capable male along with a guard dog, security system, and guards posted around the perimeters. J My Dad, Emily, and I are actually on our way to Africa, but we have to fly through Europe to get there so we just decided to take a couple day lay over in Paris.

As I sit in the airport it amazes me that I’m about to take the same trip many immigrants took, yet it will take me only 7 ½ hours to fly from the US to France. I actually flew near Ellis Island as we landed. Millions of immigrants over the last hundred years have taken that trip (the opposite way), by boat. They spent their entire life savings on boat tickets to bring them and their families to a new life. Often they left family members, never to see them again. They left lands of famine, drought, and starvation. Yet, I’m taking the trip in less than a day, and I’m leaving a wonderful home. I will see my family again in a matter of weeks. Times have changed.

*Emily here, I would like to take this time to state that this blog post has been highly embellished and is historically inaccurate. Anna saw a sign for a flight to Sweden, therefore she assumed that everyone in the nearby vicinity was Swedish. She made this same assumption for the flights to Hong Kong and Peru respectively. Also, during our flight we were in the general area of New York City. Therefore, Anna made another (faulty I might add) assumption that we must have flown directly over Ellis Island. While this post maybe entertaining, do not assume that any of it is actually true. Signed your editor, Emily.

**Anna here again. Okay, perhaps I embellished things a bit, but not as much as Emily suggests. There are Chinese people milling around, no I did not check their passports to see if they were Chinese but they sure looked it, same with Sweden and Peru.  It just sounded better that way. And maybe we didn’t flying directly over Ellis Island, but we flew right next to New York City and I could see where Ellis Island would be if we were just a little bit closer. Trust me, it was there.

Maybe you won't find this interesting but I think it is. :)

Its (not that) Complicated

For the year 2012, my New Year's resolution is to read one book a week. I love to read but so often I do not find the right time to pick up a book. This year I hope will be different. I will also write a review on every book and post it here on my blog.

This week the book is one I received as a Christmas present,

It's (not that) Complicated:
How to relate to guys in a healthy, sane, and biblical way

This book was written to point single girls towards the Bible's principles on the interaction between the sexes. Here are some of the points they make:

The world does not revolve around females or males, it revolves around God.   Underneath that, "Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man." 1 Corinthians 11:9.

Quite often in today's world girls make up a fairy tale husband--Mr. Darcy, Edward Cullen, etc. These men seem perfect yet they do not exist in real life, the man you will marry will be a wretched sinner... just like you.

Women complain today there aren't any more gentlemen left in the world, but perhaps it has not occurred to them that it's partly their fault. Men were designed to lead and work (Genesis 1), but in the early 20th century there were women suffrages. Women argued they were the same as men and therefore should be allowed to do everything men did. This took the uniqueness and importance of the men's job away from them and since the women were the "same" as them so men have no reason to be chivalrous; women are "one of the guys" now.

Similarly, girls complain there are no real men left and yet they think their brothers are annoying and consistently try and get away from them. It turns out that these annoying little brothers are the future men. Consequently, if we help by encouraging our brothers to be men, there will be more real men in the world.

The book isn't called It's (not that) Hard. Relationships are hard, but "the more we strive and struggle for purity, selflessness, and God's perspective, the more things become Not That Complicated.

Don't be like the Proverbs 7 woman who is an adulteress and prowls for her next "lover". Yet, understand we could become like her.

If you are talking to a young man, who is eligible, imagine that his wife is standing next to him. Would you still say the same things and act the same way? What if your husband stood next to you? Proverbs 31: 12 says, "She does her husband good and not harm ALL the days of her life." This means before she knows who he is! She should not try to attract the attention of a man she does not know she is going to marry.

Many young women refuse to talk with their parents about their feelings. Turns out, whether we think so or not, they've probably been in the same situation before and they can give biblical counsel.

Be the woman that a man you want to marry would desire. In other words, if you want a man that is strong and steadfast and only has eyes for you, it's not fair for you to be batting your eyes at any eligible man that walks by. Do you want a man who wants a wife who spends most of her time at a job outside of the home? Or one that wants to come home to a home cooked meal with his wife and children that he loves and provides for?

Make friends with guys. Look at them as brothers in Christ instead of only possible husbands.

As single women, our goal in life should not be to get married and if we do not then our whole life has been a failure. God's plans are not ours. If it is His will for you to get married, you will marry at exactly the time he ordains to the man He has chosen for you. No amount of wishing and daydreaming can change that. Therefore our main goal should be to bring God glory and to further His kingdom.

And one last thing, if you are not familiar with the idea of courtship or desire a career over marriage, this book probably won't make much sense to you. It's a wonderful book, but I would suggest other books before you read this one.

2011

Here is picture collage of this past year. It was quite the year!

It snowed!! For some people this means nothing but for us this is huge.

In late January we flew out to Breckenridge, Colorado, for an adventure-filled week of skiing, snowboarding, and dog sledding.

In March we attended the Economics conference in Raleigh

And all throughout the year I spent time with friends

In April we drove down to Charleston for a weekend tour celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

In May I flew to Europe for the trip of my dreams.

First we visited Rome, Italy

Then Budapest, Hungary

Then we took a train which traveled through Germany

And Austria

And ended in Switzerland

Two weeks after I arrived back my dear friend Maryfrances got married.

Two weeks later another friend ours got married

Then in August more friends got married in Colorado and Emily and I flew out and stayed with friends and had a wonderful time.

After Colorado, Emily and I continued on to Idaho where we helped out our aunt who had just had her fourth baby.

In September numerous members of our family and friends did a triathlon here in town.

In October we drove to the mountains to see the beautiful trees and we hiked to Mt. Mitchell

We also celebrated my mom's 50th birhtday

The next weekend Carter finished his first Ironman. 2 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run!

That same weekend I was at the Gospel-Centered Marriages conference where part of the time I fellowshipped with these lovely girls

While I was there I also purchased a beautiful hammered dulcimer

And all throughout the year I help out at a homeschool co-op where I watch two of the cutest four year old boys ever.

For Thanksgiving we drove up to Ohio to see our cousins and we played games almost all day long

All throughout the summer we went to the beach, at least twice a week.

I can't imagine not living near the beach

And last but not least we drove up to D.C. to see family right after Christmas
